Amplified Stories: I Will Not Be Silent

AMPLIFIED STORIES is a platform created by KCSARC in order to amplify the voices of survivors of sexual violence. Shared experiences hold the power to validate, heal, and change. The post below was submitted by a survivor who gave KCSARC permission to share their story.

This post contains a story of sexual violence. If at any time, you feel unsafe, need support, or need to talk, please call our 24-Hour Resource Line: 1.888.99.VOICE (1.888.998.6423).

Share an experience when you or someone you know was indirectly or directly blamed for sexual violence.

My family blamed me, especially my mother, sister, and even friends. Just for being in the area. They may have been victims at some time in their lives, but as a 33-year-old male, I was not going to be silent, despite being drugged during my assault.

Share an experience where language was used to minimize sexual violence.

“You ready to go? I've got your bus fare.” (They didn't.)

Share other experiences of sexual violence you want others to know about.

Family members touching in an extremely abnormal way. Men standing near me when I was a child. Another time, a man was photographing me for his pleasure, and I noticed and felt very uncomfortable. If your parents are drunks, tell an authority or an idol in your family.
