Statement on Biden Allegation

Statement on Biden Allegation

One of the significant outcomes of the #MeToo movement has been the collective realization that sexual assault is prevalent and has been for decades. That new understanding has forced a shift in the public mindset about who perpetrators are, and how sexual assault so permeates our everyday lives. We are now more open to the possibility it could have happened even when the accusation is made against someone we believe we know – or even admire. Regading the allegation about Joe Biden, we should be willing to consider the possibility that it could have happened.

A delay in disclosing or reporting a sexual assault or abuse is extremely common. When an allegation is made about an assault that took place long ago, the reality is that the passage of time does not favor the person who was victimized. When an assault is decades old, it may be that the best possible outcome, from a victim perspective, is that the report is heard respectfully, without victim-blaming or a search for motivation, investigated to the extent possible, then concluded.
