PRESS RELEASE
KING COUNTY SEXUAL ASSAULT RESOURCE CENTER URGES AREA BUSINESSES TO ‘STICK UP FOR SURVIVORS’ DURING WORLD CUP
RENTON, Wash., June 10, 2026 — As World Cup celebrations and watch parties begin, the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) is urging area bars, restaurants and hotels to post its 24-hour sexual assault Resource Line stickers, which the nonprofit is providing free to the community.
“Studies consistently show an association between the use of alcohol/drugs and sexual assault,” said KCSARC CEO Kate Garvey. “Today we’re talking about World Cup but any big sports or entertainment event brings with it the increased use of alcohol and drugs. Whether an assault happens during World Cup or at any other time, we want survivors and anyone who is supporting a survivor to know they don’t have to go it alone; resources are available in this community.”
KCSARC Stick up for survivors campaign, launched late last year, encourages community members, business owners, schools and public venues to post stickers with 24-hour resources in places where survivors may see them.
The campaign has two distinct goals: first, to raise community awareness that free and confidential support, resources, and answers to questions about sexual assault are available 24 hours a day at 1.888.99.VOICE (1.888.998.6423); and second, to visibly show survivors that they are not alone and that support is available — whether abuse happened recently or long ago.
“It’s common for sexual assault survivors to delay reporting days, months or even years, especially those where alcohol or drugs played a role in their assaults,” Garvey said. “Victims of alcohol-facilitated sexual assault often blame themselves for what happened, even though incapacitation is not consent. We want to reassure every victim it is not your fault and we’re here to help.”
Delayed disclosures often mean delays in getting needed support for serious trauma-related impacts, including Post-Traumatic Stress and other debilitating conditions. “The sooner someone is connected with support, the less likely it is they will experience lasting impacts,” said Garvey.
As a trusted community resource for 50 years, KCSARC offers specific and comprehensive services to support sexual assault survivors, including the 24-hour Resource Line, medical and legal advocacy and therapy. All advocacy and therapy services are offered in both English and Spanish. Support is available regardless of whether a survivor chooses to or can report their sexual assault to law enforcement.
“It’s important more survivors know help is available, whenever they’re ready.”
Stickers are available in both English and Spanish, and are available for free by ordering through KCSARCs website kcsarc.org/stick-up-for-survivors.
