Education is the act of increasing knowledge and building skills by dissemination of information that promotes violence reduction strategies. Prevention is a community utilizing skills and resources to reduce violence and improve the well being of the entire community.
KCSARC believes in the importance of efforts in both education and prevention. Our work has taught us that education itself does not change behavior. Perception changes behavior, attitudes, and ideas. Prevention work is necessary for perceptions to shift and ultimately for action to occur.
Service-related activities are often grouped into three prevention categories based on when the activity occurs. Sexual Violence related activities could be divided into the following three categories: primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention our activities that take place before sexual violence has occurred to prevent initial perpetration or victimization. An example of primary prevention is our work that is aimed at groups or the general population regardless of their individual risk for sexual violence perpetration or victimization.
With secondary prevention services are an immediate response after sexual violence has occurred to deal with the short-term consequences of violence. An example of KCSARC's work with secondary prevention is in our efforts that are aimed at those who are thought to have a heightened risk for sexual violence perpetration or victimization.
KCSARC's work in tertiary prevention is in our long-term response after sexual violence has occurred to deal with the lasting consequences of violence and sex offender treatment interventions.
