KCSARC Receives Prestigious Washington Women's Foundation $100,000 grant award

"Washington Women's Foundation is honored to support King County Sexual Assault Resource Center with a major grant funded by our members, especially at a time when funding for nonprofits is on the decline," said Carla Lewis, president of Washington Women's Foundation. "Through our rigorous research and review process, Dando Voz emerged as a vital community program that will reach even more children and families through our financial support."

Of 255 nonprofit organizations that submitted letters of inquiry back in October 2008, KCSARC was selected by members of the Foundation as the award recipient in the Health category. "There were many worthy organizations involved in the grant process so receiving this award is especially meaningful," said DeAnn Yamamoto, Deputy Executive Director, who has been with KCSARC for 25 years.

Sexual assault is a difficult and sensitive subject so the Foundation's recognition of KCSARC's work will provide encouragement for people to have the conversation about its affects and how to prevent it. In the case of the Spanish-speaking community, the endorsement of a member of that community who received services at KCSARC, made all the difference in creating trust and legitimacy. "We have a true partner in the Spanish-speaking community with our Dando Voz program at KCSARC. When the community takes ownership of an issue, is when social change happens and prevention programs work," said Mary Ellen Stone, Executive Director of the agency for the last 30 years.
