King County Sexual Assault Resource Center has long specialized in prevention and intervention training for professionals who work with children and teens. This listing of offerings includes continuing education workshops of interest to those who seek to prevent victimization or re‑victimization of children and teens with whom they work.

 

Please Note:  Workshops are not offered on an on going basis.  They can be scheduled as specialized training(s) for staff or for individuals.  Please contact our Education Department at 425.226.5062 if you would like to set up a training.  The fee for each training will vary depending upon the number of individuals going through the training.

COURSE DETAILS:

Striving for Empowerment: An Educational Support Group Model for Teen Age Girls

10 clock hours or 1 academic credit

This workshop is designed for teachers, counselors and other group leaders who work with adolescent girls.  The workshop provides participants with strategies to help teen girls promote self-esteem, build positive relationship skills and reduce their vulnerability to sexual victimization.  Participants will receive a notebook of reproducible activities and information designed to be used in a support group format lasting up to 22 weeks.  Overview information about the dynamics and impact of sexual violence as it pertains to teen girls will be included.

A Discussion Group Model for Guys

10 clock hours or 1 academic credit

 

This workshop is designed for teachers, counselors and other group leaders who work with adolescent boys.  The workshop will focus on relationship building skills, communication, empathy, the risks of sexual victimization as well as potentially victimizing behavior, and providing an opportunity for young men to affirm or form positive relationship values.  Each participant will receive a notebook of reproducible activities to use in a discussion group format lasting 14 to 20 weeks.

Ending Violence Institute: Addressing Bullying, Harassment, Anti-Gay Violence and Sexual Assault

 

30 clock hours or 3 academic credits

 

The Ending Violence Institute is a highly interactive quarter-long training that prepares those working with youth to address issues of sexual harassment, biased-based harassment, bullying, anti-gay violence and sexual assault among young people.

Suicide & Sexual Violence: Information to Intervention

This new workshop is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the dynamics between sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual violence and suicide.  The syllabus will focus on risk factors, warning cues, myths, facts, depression and hopelessness that can lead to suicide.  Participants will receive a notebook with resources and information to increase their confidence and competence in intervention and referrals.  Participants will have an opportunity to practice intervention skills throughout the workshop.

This workshop is designed to provide the participant with an understanding of personal safety tactics and strategies for work, home and community.  The workshop will cover warning signs, communication, boundary setting, safety myths/facts, and Internet safety on day one.  During the second day we will focus on how about how to address safety within your own life and within the world where you live and work.  Participants will receive a notebook of resources and opportunities to practice safety skills.

This workshop is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the dynamics of child abuse & neglect, family violence and chemical dependency.  The workshop will focus on indicators of these related risks, mandated reporting & the inter‑relatedness of these issues. An introduction to a broad developmental range of activities and lessons for prevention will be provided.

This workshop is designed for professionals who work with parents.  The workshop provides participants with tools and strategies to encourage, validate and facilitate parental participation.  Participants will be supplied with a notebook of reproducible activities that assist the family and the facilitator in assessing needs, strengths and solutions to concerns.  An overview of strength-based theories will be included.

The Burnout Banquet: A Workshop to Feed the Professional

 

10 clock hours or 1 academic credit

 

This comprehensive workshop will explore the individual symptoms of burnout, analyze personal, professional and organizational sources of burnout, and culminate with the formation of personal strategies designed to counteract on-the-job disillusionment and stress of professional caregivers.  Overall a fun and relaxing opportunity to address professional stress.

Fostering Community Collaboration: A Field Guide to Social Change

 

10 clock hours or 1 academic credit

  

Participants of this interactive workshop will discover the theory and practice behind facilitating collaboration within a community and/or group of people.  This workshop explores skills in fostering community ownership; tools that begin the process of change and strategies to maintain collaborative efforts.  A willing to collaborate is the only requirement.

ASL interpretation and workshop materials printed on colored paper are available for all workshops. These services require at least 21 days advance notice prior to the workshop of your choice. Please indicate your need for any of above services when you register (425- 226-5062).  The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) accredits all workshops for Continuing Education clock hours. All of the workshops can be taken for academic credit through Seattle Pacific University. Workshops are also approved by the Washington State Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs to meet on-going training requirements. Due to funding cuts in the county we are no longer able to offer scholarships.  All workshops have a lower cost to help offset this change.
