Comprehensive Approaches to Sex Offender Management: A grant from the Department of Justice

The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking (SMART) has been providing grant money to team who are in the process of establishing comprehensive strategies to manage sex offenders under community supervision. The Comprehensive Approaches to Sex Offender Management Program assists state and local jurisdictions in improving their adult and juvenile sex offender management policies and practices by critically examining existing approaches to monitoring and managing the population; identifying significant gaps and needs; and developing strategies to address the needs. The grant focuses on two areas:

  1. Capacity Building & Comprehensive approaches: Expand and enhance community education and prevention efforts utilizing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to enhance public safety and offender accountability.
  2. MDT to address identified gaps: The project will conduct focused education to landlords and faith communities to address issues that these groups face in working with sex offender relocation. We will have additional focused education and partnerships with school districts to assist in addressing safety when juvenile sex offenders attend school.
