 about kcsarc:

our mission

We give voice to victims, their families and the community;
We create change in beliefs, attitudes and behaviors about violence:
We instill courage for people to speak out about sexual assault.

our vision

Our purpose is to alleviate, as much as possible, the trauma of sexual assault for victims and their families.  As an agency, we ultimately want to eliminate sexual assault, and to ensure the freedom to live without fear.

our values

KCSARC operates from the following beliefs:

  • Services are focused to meet the victim's needs
  • Services are provided in a no-cost, confidential manner
  • The agency maintains a balance of services to victims and prevention education to the community.
  • Sexual assault is a problem that impacts everyone, having roots in large social issues of sexism, racism, & homophobia

our history

Founded in 1976 as King County Rape Relief, KCSARC has grown to be the largest sexual assault victim's service organization in Washington.  Responsible for creating nationally-recognized  prevention education and therapeutic programs, KCSARC's work has been replicated around the country. Our original book, He Told Me Not To Tell, which was the first ever published about child sexual abuse,  has been printed in 10 languages in 8 countries.  At last count, over a million copies have been distributed.

Our pioneering work in collaboration with the King County Prosecutor's Office created our Legal Advocacy program, which is the model for similar programs in counties throughout the United States.

In 2002, KCSARC was named by Washington CEO magazine as the "Best Place to Work" in the non-profit category.  We were also given the "Business Excellence Award" by the Renton Chamber of Commerce & the "Business Innovation Award" by the Kent Chamber of Commerce.  Lindsay Palmer, KCSARC's Director of Education, was named "2002 Citizen of the Year" by the Municipal League of King County.

We are proud of our achievements and the enormous changes that we have seen over the past 30 years.  And we are looking forward to the future and the elimination of sexual assault in our community.

agency funding
