The 2007 Renton “Kids Are Our Business” Breakfast was a huge success and raised close to $50,000 for KCSARC.  Thanks to the support of our Table Captains, Event Committee and generous Sponsors the Spirit of Washington Event Center was filled with over 200 guests on the morning of October 24th.  Keith Eldridge of KOMO 4 TV emceed the event and recognized our elected officials of the community.  Chief Fae Brooks, ret. emphasized the important role KCSARC plays with law enforcement.  KCSARC’s Executive Director, Mary Ellen Stone, gave a message of hope as sexual assault statistics are on the decline nation wide.  She also focused on ways in which KCSARC will be reaching new communities in 2008 in hopes to educate the broader public about sexual abuse.  Guests viewed KCSARC’s 2007 brief Public Service Announcement video.  Pastor Kirby Unti, Renton’s 2007 Citizen of the Year, inspired guests to participate by making a contribution to help children and families.

The highlight of the morning was hearing Renton resident and client speaker Kelly’s “fairy tale” story.  Her “fairy tale” was shattered, however, when both of her daughters were sexually assaulted by a trusted teenage babysitter.  Kelly’s story illustrates that often perpetrators are not always the people we expect them to be, but by listening to her children and providing the right support, including services from KCSARC, her story did end happily ever after.
